One choice ライブ live The Coelacanth is a rare, deep-sea fish with limb-like lobed fins and a prehistoric lineage dating back over 360 million years. The coelacanth first evolved almost 400 million years ago. The coelacanth is one of the best-known examples of a "living fossil": the living remnant of an ancient lineage of fish dating back nearly 400 million years. The erected coelacanth first dorsal fin posture is an important part of the iconic symbol of these ancient fish, but it may be reflecting stressful situations such as responses to potential predators. Our observation clearly showed that the dorsal fin is in a folded position during a steady relaxed state of the fish and it can be unfolded in The Coelacanth was eventually named (scientific name: Latimeria chalumnae) in honour of Miss Courtney-Latimer. Sulawesi Coelacanth. In 1998 a Coelacanth was caught in Sulawesi, Indonesia. The only obvious difference between it and the Coelacanth from the Comoros Islands was the colour. The story of the coelacanth's discovery eight decades ago by a young woman, Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer, is told and retold, including recently in this delightful video by HHMI BioInteractive Anatomy, Diversity, and Evolution Anatomy. Numerous characteristics are unique to the coelacanth among living fishes. Among them is the presence of a "rostral organ" in the snout that is part of the electrosensory system, and an intracranial joint or "hinge" in the skull that allows the anterior portion of the cranium to swing upwards, greatly enlarging the gape of the mouth. Many scientists believe that the unique characteristics of the coelacanth represent an early step in the evolution of fish to terrestrial four-legged animals like amphibians.
